Soldiers and Blitzkrieg is a game that is in the tradition of the World War Two themed Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations, but with a few key differences. Firstly, there are no humans or air units in the game: instead you have your own squad of troops, each of whom can be configured with a whole host of weapons, equipment, armor, and abilities. While there are no humans in the game, you can assign any of your heroes to act as a tank commander, squad leader, body guard, sniper, artillery officer, or whatever else you feel would make them most effective.

The basic rules of engagement are simple but effective: the player must lead her squad of troops into the enemy lines and liberate a series of strongholds, before seeking out the next objective. These strongholds are protected by automated defenses and elite troops, and in order to secure them the troops must destroy them and take control of the surrounding area. Some strongholds can also be breached by air support, and in the later levels the player can employ Vyper-class Assault Vehicles to accomplish this. While the player is free to take a direct, head-on approach to the strongholds, what is far more effective and rewarding is a flanking maneuver. By sending out scouts ahead of the main body of troops, the player can uncover vital information and even more excitingly gain valuable first-hand knowledge of the enemy forces. Once the enemy has been spotted, the player's forces are free to take their pick of the best way to attack. In addition to the standard tactics of close combat, vehicle-mounted weaponry, and air strikes, the player can also utilize a variety of specialist units. Many of these are restricted to the higher levels of play, but they add a welcome variety to the experience.
