A sequel to the film, titled Waqt 2: The Race Against Time, was announced in early 2010.[19] It was directed by Farhan Akhtar and stars Shah, Alia Bhatt and Konkona Sen Sharma.[20][21] The film was released on August 11, 2014.[22]

The filmmakers hoped to release the film on Christmas Day, 2008 to avoid repeat screenings on television during the months of Ramadan, but the film was released on 29 May 2009, ten days after the actual date and it faced competition from Bollywood films like Kaminey and Lagaan.[12] The film opened in theatres on May 29, 2009, to very negative reviews from critics[13] and did not do well at the box office despite earning over ₹40 crore in its first three days.[14] In 2009, the film was released on DVD by the maker's company Blockbuster Movies Entertainment One.[15]
